Edith passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 1, 2015 in Fairview Home, Brandon at the age of 93 years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who touched many people with her pleasant, sincere personality.
A Celebration of Mum’s Life will be held on the May Long Weekend, Monday, May 18, 2015 at 1:30 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel in Portage la Prairie. The burial will take place prior to the service. We will gather at the McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 12 noon and proceed to Hillside Cemetery.
She was predeceased by her husband Hector Lamont, parents George and Edith (nee Preston) Nelson, brothers Dave, Ben and Charlie, sisters Grace, Annie, Maude and Margaret. In her passing, Mum leaves to mourn daughters, Glenda (Chuck) Calnan with grandchildren Suzanne and Brendan; Gloria (Neil) Hagen and grandchildren Heather and Cameron; Alma (Bill) Wilson/Miller and grandchildren Andrea and Jennifer; Heather (Bob) Miller and grandchildren Bobby and Haley along with the grandchildren’s spouses, 8 great grandchildren, sisters Gladys Watkinson and Iris (Bud) Clark and numerous nieces and nephews and their families plus special family friend, Wendy Wilson.
Mum was born on May 14, 1921 at Lily Bay in the Inter Lake Area of Manitoba, the ninth child in George and Edith Nelson’s family of ten. Mum received her elementary education at West Curtis School and later attended Portage Collegiate Institute followed by Winnipeg Normal School where she received her teaching certificate. In 1941 she began her teaching career at Image Creek School in the North Norfolk Municipality and taught for a total of 26 years teaching as well in Nairn, North Ward and La Verendrye schools before retiring in1981.
Mum and Dad married in 1943 and raised their family of four girls, first on the farm and then due to Dad’s health they moved in 1956 to make their home in Portage la Prairie.
Mum was an active member in her community. She worked in the needlework section for the Portage Exhibition receiving her Life Time Membership in 1993; was a 45 year member in the Order of the Royal Purple having served as Past Honoured Royal Lady; and was a member of Trinity United Church and served as President of Unit A for several years. Mum enjoyed gardening, crafts, knitting, sewing, crocheting and quilting and in her younger years participated in baseball, curling, dancing and bowling in the Elk’s league. She cherished her family and was always proud of their various accomplishments.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful 5 th floor staff of Fairview for the excellent care given to Mum.
After being alone for 25 years, Mum's dance card is filled again – exclusively with Dad.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Mum’s memory to Trinity United Church, 15 Tupper Street S, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1W7 or to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 108 B Saskatchewan, Ave. E. Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 0L1.
