Peacefully, on August 11, 2024, Doreen began her journey to the Spirit World at the Minnedosa Health Centre at the age of 73 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Nadia Skeet, Cindy Bone and Sean Blackbird, all of Keeseekoowenin First Nation, Curt Blackbird, Tina Blackbird and Mark Blackbird, all of Winnipeg, MB, 37 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, siblings Norman Peters of Long Plain First Nation, Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Peters of Vancouver, BC and Grace Fontaine (Peters) of Long Plain First Nation and sisters-in-law Yvonne Peters and Mary West as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Doreen was predeceased by her parents Wallace and Helen (Myerion) Peters, husband Ross Blackbird, son Trenton Blackbird, grandchildren Cody Burns, Niaomi Anchiuk, Jackie Anchiuk and Allanna Bone, siblings Bob Peters, Roy Peters, Hugh Peters, Eddie Peters and Ronald Peters and sisters-in-law Linda Peters (Shannacappo) and Elizabeth Peters.

Doreen was born at Portage Hospital on August 31, 1950. She attended Birtle Indian Residential School for eight years. She had a very loving childhood with her Mother and father and brothers and sister. Doreen Also attended Portage Collegiate, Brandon University and Red River College. Doreen married her partner Ross Blackbird on October 25, 1968. During their marriage, Doreen and Ross had seven children, four boys and three girls. Doreen started in the housekeeping industry and then moved on to education, where she taught her language. Doreen was very kind and would help and take friends and family into her home that were struggling, giving them shelter and food. Doreen loved gardening, cooking, cleaning, collecting antiques and the small things. She loved her houseplants, yard saleing, Bingo, camping and the Pow Wow trail. Doreen will be greatly missed by all.

Wake will take place on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge beginning at 4:00 pm. Feast and ceremony will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge beginning at noon. Burial to follow at the Dauphin Myerion Cemetery.
