Peacefully, on February 18, 2025, Doreen Bagrie passed away at Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie at the age of 95 years.
Born to Zephyr and Cora Bourgeois on March 22, 1929, in Rainy River, Ontario, Doreen was the eldest of two daughters. Shortly after, the family moved to Amaranth, MB and then to Portage la Prairie where she received her education at Victoria School and PCI. Doreen married Cliff Bagrie in June 1952, and they continued to reside in Portage to raise their children.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband Cliff, daughter Barbara Wilde, parents Zephyr and Cora Bourgeois, parents-in-law Williamina and John Bagrie, sister and brother-in-law Clare and John Atkins, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Rev. Murray and Margaret Thompson and beloved cat Sammy.
Doreen will be lovingly remembered by daughter Byrna (Kelly) McDermid, granddaughters Kaitlyn (Nate) Coates and Chelsea McDermid all of Portage, son John (Connie) Bagrie, grandchildren Kyle Bagrie and Amy (Mark Koverzin) Bagrie all of Winnipeg and grandchildren Tyler (Lana) Wilde and Blaine Wilde of Calgary, AB, as well as great-grand daughters Hazel Wilde and Mindy Coates. She will also be missed by many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Doreen worked various clerical jobs throughout her career, retiring from the Children's Aid Society of Central Manitoba (now CFS-CM) after 18 years. She formed many lasting friendships there and remained close with her co-workers for decades after her employment. Doreen was a long-time member of McKenzie United Church and an active and devoted volunteer in our community. Doreen was a 50+ year member of, and past Grand Matron of, Electa Chapter No. 2, Order of the Eastern Star.
She loved anything to do with grandchildren, travel, gardening, flowers, Crescent Lake, birds and the sunshine.
Mom leaves a legacy of kindness, generosity and compassion. Everyone who knew mom adored her. Her dedication to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren was endless. She had this incredible ability to make each of us all feel special. She was always there to offer love, support and encouragement. Thank you for being the heart of our family. We love you always and forever.
As per Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held. A private family gathering will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Community Foundation of Portage and District - The Cliff and Doreen Bagrie Memorial Fund.
A tree will be planted and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com 204-857-4021
