Donavon (Don) Arthur Balch

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Don Balch on January 20, 2013 at the age of 67.

He is lovingly remembered by his partner Heather Muirhead of 46 years.  Also left to mourn his passing are his siblings Kenneth (Maxine) Balch, Calvin (Darlene) Balch, Viola (Roy) Davidson, Betsy (Rene) Chaput; nieces, nephews and many friends.  Don was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Ethel.

Don was born in Portage la Prairie on April 26, 1945 and lived at the family farm.  He recieved his education at South Ridge School and later on attended Red River College receiving a certificate in Diesel Mechanics in 1977.  Don worked as a diesel mechanic in various locations in Western Canada.  He was a natural mechanic and could fix just about anything. Don would do all of this in his friendly quiet manner. He was a very caring man with a heart of gold.  Don also loved to attend auction sales, which took him all over Manitoba.  He loved animals, the outdoors, hunting and gardening.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

A private family interment will take place.  Everyone is welcome to join the family for a Reception on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 2:00 pm at McKenzie United Church Hall, 85 – 11 Street NW.

Flowers are gratefully declined.  If friends so wish, donations may be made in Don’s memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba – Portage Office, 103 Wilkinson Crescent, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1A7 or to Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Box 1426, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3N9.
