Donald Wesley James Whyte
Peacefully on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at his residence, Don passed away at the age of 78 years.
Don was predeceased by his parents Fred and Lillian Whyte, brother Bill and wife Ina, and sister Ruth Holliday.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Carole, daughters Debbie, Kim, Kelly, stepson Bill (Tammy), and his faithful dog Matty. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Rio, Shane, Austin, Keanen, Sophie, Braeden, and great grandson Kaiden, as well as his brother Tom (Shirley), sister Diane, and many nieces and nephews.
Don was born and raised in Portage. Following graduation from PCI he attended the University of Manitoba and the University of Denver on a hockey scholarship. He settled in B.C. and taught school for 7 years. He then returned to Portage and taught school at Arthur Meighen and Prince Charles until retirement in 1988.
Don loved all sports, mainly hockey and football. He was an avid bridge player and played in many tournaments. He also taught the game at the Herman Prior Centre. Don had a great love for gardening and spent may hours in his greenhouse and huge garden tending to his vegetables and flowers.
Don returned on a regular basis to Denver as he was president of the Denver University Alumni. As president of the B.S Club he had a passion for raising money for various organizations within Portage.
In keeping with Don's wishes there will be no funeral service. If friends so wish, donations in Don's memory can be made to Portage and District General Hospital, 524 5th St SE, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3A8.
