It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin and grandfather Donald John Mitchell, age 66 years, at Winnipeg Health Science Centre, on Friday, January 7, 2011.

Don was predeceased by his father Robert and mother Ina; brother Robert; father-in-law Jack Vivian Doerr; and sister-in-law Wendy Doerr as well as numerous aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie (nee Doerr); sons Donald (Sheila) and Michael (Dee) and daughter Kate Doerr and will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Taylor, Jackson, Carter, Sara, Grady, Travis and Bryson of whom he was so proud. Don is also survived by his brother Jim (Rose), sister Shirley (Lawrence) Mann and was much loved by his sister-in-law Susan McAllister and her children and mother-in-law Flora Doerr all of Ontario.

Don was a proud member of the RCAF, having served his country at home and abroad for over 33 years, retiring in 1994. He spent 15 years working for Wal-Mart and then retired to garden, woodwork and renovate his home in 2009. Don's laughter could be heard all over the neighbourhood or the stores where he shopped.

Words cannot express the family's deepest thanks to the staff of CCU of Health Science Centre for their loving care during his brief illness. A special thank you to nurses Ruth and Nabeel and doctors Metcalfe, Bow, Wong and Roberts.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will take place on the prairies under a full blue sky later this summer.

As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Don's memory to Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Sask. Ave. E, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N OK8 or Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Box 1426, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3N9.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
