Delores Mary "Del" Sommer
(nee Cochrane)
On Wednesday, November 16, 2011, Delores Sommer age 78 years of Portage la Prairie, passed away at the Portage and District General Hospital.
Del will be lovingly remembered by her children Dale (Amelia) Sommer, Jim Sommer, Gail (Laurent) Houle, Brenda (Robert) Tate, and Donald Sommer; and grandchildren Luke, Andy, Kevin, Danielle, Tamara, Jodelle, Ryan, Eric and Mackenzie; and great grandchildren Matthew, and Kowan.
She was predeceased by her parents Dorothy and Victor Cochrane and by her husband Clarence Sommer.
Del was raised on a farm near Bagot, Manitoba in a family of four boys and three girls. She was a natural with horses and was known for breaking and training them for horseback riding. At a young age, Del moved to Portage and worked at Dicks CafAC. aswell as in other public services. It was during this time that she met and married Clarence Sommer. They made Portage their home and raised their five children.
Del enjoyed gardening, baking and sewing. She was proud of her rose garden and was very talented in making her own and all her children's clothing. Del put a great deal of effort into the family camping excursions, of which they all enjoyed. She also cherished her time spent with her grandchildren.
For many years, Del was a member of the Order of the Royal Purple ladies. In 1997, Del became amember of the COPP. She was also a member of the Southport Bowling League.
A Celebration of Del's life will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. Friends may attend viewing on Sunday, November 20, 2011 from 7:00 a�" 8:00 p.m. also at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
