Charles "Chuck" Young

Suddenly on April 26, 2019 near the family cottage at Child’s Lake, MB, Chuck Young passed away at the age of 68.

Chuck was born in Portage la Prairie, MB to Andrew (Andy) & Aileen.  He attended Victoria and Arthur Meighen Schools. He had a passion for the outdoors and spent his boyhood hunting and trapping near his family’s nursery in what now is the Koko Platz area of Portage.  He carried on this passion and obtained a diploma in Resource Management from Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Arts and Science.  It was at this time that he met the love of his life Barb.  They married July 5th, 1974 and moved to Grand Rapids, MB where he began his career as a Natural Resource Officer.  They moved to Ashern, MB in 1975 where they also began a greenhouse & landscaping business.  They began their family in 1979 when Aaron was born and their family was complete with the birth of Jared in 1981.  In 1983 they moved to Flin Flon, MB and in 1988 to Thompson, MB.  Chuck finished his career in Portage la Prairie, MB and retired after 34 dedicated years as a Manitoba Natural Resource Officer to pursue his hobbies of fly fishing, hunting and snowmobiling.  Chuck’s dedication to his career, community and conservation left profound impacts everywhere he lived and worked.  His commitment to mentoring youth as a leader of many through the Scouting movement, as a mentor of youth hunters and of new officers has touched the lives of many.  His passion for conservation and the outdoors was only surpassed by his love for his family and he took every opportunity possible to share this passion with his wife and kids.  The family enjoyed many adventures together afield and especially enjoyed spending time together at their family cottage in the Duck Mountains.  His teachings and guidance as a father continue to serve his children well as they follow in his steps.  He was a proud grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his four grandchildren.  He was also actively engaged in volunteering on the Duck Mountain Cottage Owners Association and the Swan Valley Sport Fishing Enhancement Inc.  Chuck was happiest on the water pursuing that elusive fish of a lifetime or getting “in tight” with a bugling bull elk.  He also loved hosting extravagant family barbecues with friends and families.

Chuck will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his devoted wife of 44 years Barbara “Barb” Anna Young (nee Bustin) their two sons and four grandchildren:  Aaron (Amanda) Koss-Young, son Reily and daughter Keanna of Whitehorse, YT; and Jared (Amy), daughter Emily and son Lucas of Oakbank, MB; two brothers and one sister Jim (Linda) of Portage la Prairie, MB; David (Nadine) of Red Deer, AB; Grace of Portage la Prairie, MB; brothers and sisters-in law, Larry Duerr of Fulda, SK, Frank Bustin of Saskatoon (SK); Paul Bustin of Edmonton (AB); Mary Bustin of Edmonton, AB; and by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.  He was predeceased by his parents Aileen (nee Hewitt) and Andrew, sisters Lynda and Phyllis & very recently by his sister-in-law Bernie Duerr (nee Bustin).

A Celebration of Chuck’s life will take place on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the William Glesby Centre, 11- 2nd Street NE, Portage la Prairie, MB.
