Brett Renee Meeches

April 9, 1985– May 21, 2017

32 years of age

With grieving hearts, we the family of Brett Renee Meeches, Spirit name of Continuing Thunderbird, of the wolf clan, sadly announce that she has travelled back to be with our Creator, on Sunday, May 21, 2017.

Predeceased by her parents Glen Tait Sr. and Mavis Meeches; uncle Bryan Tait Sr., uncle Laverne Tait her brothers, Victor Cory Hardisty jr. and Glen Garry Tait Jr., Grandfather Arthur Meeches and Grandmother Dorothy Meeches (nee Cameron), beloved uncle Robbie Meeches and aunty Janice Meeches and aunty Val Cameron.

She will be fiercely missed by her partner, Robbie Poorman, and their two beautiful boys, Glenn Freedom Meeches, and Mistatim Meeches. She also fostered and will be missed by Gage and Chelsea Cameron. Also her sisters Candace Meeches and Lindsay Meeches, sister of her heart Ashley Tait, her brothers, Brandon Meeches and Bryceson Tait, and Jesse Daniels, step-mother Roselyn Tait, and grandmother Brenda Myran. She will also be missed by numerous uncles and aunties, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as her wide circle of friends whom she considered family.

Brett was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. She also lived in various other communities including Long Plain First Nation, Swan Lake First Nation, Edmonton, Connecticut in the States and finally in Winnipeg where she settled to work on her education and to raise her family.

She travelled extensively with the drum group Mystic River as her late father was a singer. She also proudly danced jingle style, along with her sister, at many different powwows across Turtle Island.

When she moved back to Winnipeg she was determined to lead a successful life and she resumed her education. She graduated with honours from the Information & Office Administrative Assistant Program with the Neeginan College of Applied Technology in 2015. She had also just graduated, again with honours, from Red River College with a diploma from the Computer Application for Business program, in February 2017.

During this time she became a mother to two beautiful little boys. Her first born Glenn, known as Freedom, brought her a fulfillment that she had never experienced before, and she was extremely proud of all his accomplishments. He was later gifted with a little brother, Mistatim, and she felt complete with her family.

She was an amazing mother and she had been teaching the boys how to be protectors, and to be proud of their anishinaabe roots. Her friends and family will continue on with these teachings. The boys will always know of the sacrifices their mother made for them. Her beautiful sons are her legacy to all of us. We will watch with admiration as they grow and become the men she knew they would be.

Brett, you touched so many lives in your short time on this earth. Your life was filled with struggle but you were always so positive and loving despite everything. You were not only beautiful on the outside but also on the inside. Your loyalty was always graciously given to those you loved and it was easy to feel relaxed and happy in your presence. Your strength and perseverance were inspiring and we will always be proud of you and your accomplishments. We never thought, in a million years, that we would be the ones saying goodbye first. We will spend the rest of our lives missing you; We love you.

Giga-wabaamin minawaa, until we meet again.

Viewing will take place at the Aboriginal Funeral Home on Thursday,  June 1, 2017 from 7:00pm – 10:00 p.m.

Traditional Wake will take place on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 4:00pm at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge.

Traditional Feast and Funeral Service will be held at Long Plain Spirit Lodge on Saturday June 3, 2017 at 12:00 noon.  Interment to follow at the Indian Springs Cemetery where she will be laid to rest by her late father and her late brother.

We wish to acknowledge all of Brett's cousins and friends as her honorary pallbearers.

Pallbearers will be Jamie Meeches, Brent Meeches, Robbie Poorman, Bryce Tait, Bryan Tait and David Hardisty.

An Angel

By an Unknown Author

An angel lived among us,

A gift from God above.

She showered us with kindness

And shared with us her love.

She cherished every moment

With the man who was her life;

Walking hand in hand together,

Facing life with all its strife.

She loved her children dearly,

Each one a different way,

Nestled close within her heart.

Though, now, she’s far away.

She’s gone to live with Creator.

But, she’s here with us, today,

Smiling down on every one of us,

And telling us she’s O.K.

Legacy of Love

By an Unknown Author

A wife, a mother, a sister too,

This is the legacy we have from you.

You taught us love and how to fight,

You gave us strength, you gave us might.

A stronger person would be hard to find,

And in your heart, you were always kind.

You fought for us all in one way or another,

Not just as a wife not just as a mother.

For all of us you gave your best,

Now the time has come for you to rest.

So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep,

Your love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep.
