Betty Irma Sproat

Peacefully on Thursday, November 13, 2014 Betty Sproat passed away with family by her side at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 87 years.
She was predeceased by her mother Rosine; father George; brothers Billy and Clifford; sisters Peggy, Alice and Elsie; niece Lynn. Betty was also predeceased by her husband William; son Billy; daughter Irma; son-in-law Elmer Pashe; son Micheal; daughter in law Diane Kwiatkowski; son-in-law Allan Spence and granddaughter Dusty. She leaves to mourn her brother Walter (Elaine) Hickman and her children Ronald (Lorraine) Kwiatkowski, Joanne (Gerald) Mooney, Linda (Milton) Tames, Debra (Tom) Sproat- Gibson, Kimberley (Terry) Drake, Kelly (Terry) Human, Karen Walsh (Allan Spence), Helen Sproat, David (Linda) Sproat, Faron (Connie) Sproat and Les McLaren; 35 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; 15 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Betty Sproat was born in Winnipeg Beach, the eldest daughter of George and Rosine Hickman. Her family than moved to the St. Ambroise area than later resided in Portage where she attended North Ward School and then Portage Collegiate. She married and raised a large family in Portage la Prairie. She volunteered and sat on many boards in different rolls throughout her life being active to better the community she lived in. She was recognized as a mentor, volunteer and respected elder (Kokum) at the Portage Friendship Center. In August she attended an unveiling of a self Portrait of herself and friend Gladys Cook for their achievements. She attended church with her friends at the Salvation Army. She enjoyed camping with her family and spending time alone. She also enjoyed doing crafts and puzzles and having coffee with her families and friends.
A Funeral Service will take place on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 1:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, led by Peter and Amanda Robinson. A private burial will be held at the Hillside Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to a charity of your choice.
