Barbara Elizabeth Bereza
(nee Grant)
Peacefully, Barbara Bereza passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 with family by her side at Lions Prairie Manor at the age of 87 years.
Barbara is predeceased by her husband Michael (Mac), brothers Fred and Gordon, brother-in-law Paul Strelic, and adopted sister Jean. She leaves her daughter Maxine (Ken Shyiak), and sons Fred (April) and Jeff (Lynne); grandchildren Dean (Tricia), Jay (Gen), and Sandi Shyiak (Nate); Cori (Cam) and Carli Bereza (Ernie); and Kelsey (Stan) and Lindsay Bereza (Jesse); great-grandchildren Paige and Sidney Shyiak; and Hunter Bereza. Barbara also leaves her brother-in-law Bill Bereza (Carol) and sister-in-law Helen Strelic, several nieces and nephews, and Jean's family.
Barbara was born on February 25, 1924 in Basswood, Manitoba, the youngest of three children born to Barbara and Gordon Grant. She received her education in Moline, Manitoba and later moved to Neepawa, Manitoba where she met her husband, Michael "Mac" Bereza, who was stationed at the air base in Neepawa.
Barbara and Mac married in 1946 and moved to Portage la Prairie. In 1947, they bought a "war time" home on 3rdStreet S.E. where they raised their family. During their early years Barbara held jobs at Lions Prairie Manor and Greenberg's Grocery while taking care of Mac and their three children, Maxine, Fred, and Jeff. Jeff's arrival resulted in their house being too small, so Barbara and Mac moved into a motel with their three kids for six months so it could be renovated. The enlarged family home was the scene of many happy gatherings over the years.
During those years their southeast neighbourhood was filled with young families. Barbara and Mac enjoyed socializing with their neighbours, many of whom also became close friends. Summer afternoon "happy hours" were a tradition that carried on for many years.
She was an animal lover who enjoyed pets of all kinds, both her own and others. When the grandchildren were grown and no longer needed to stay at Grandma's while their parents went on vacations their various dogs, cats and birds were still welcome.
Mac passed away in 2004 and Barbara remained in her home for the next five years. During this time she enjoyed attending the meat draws at the Legion. Barbara also continued to enjoy her "happy hour" and the odd cigarette. Her sweet tooth was notorious and her family made sure she was well supplied with treats during this time. In 2009, Barbara moved into the Lions Prairie Manor where she resided until her passing.
Mom devoted her life to her husband and family. Her children and grandchildren all have fond memories of being fussed over by Grandma. Her homemade chicken noodle soup cured all ails and her teapot was always full. She greeted everyone with a "hi, dear" and was never happier than when surrounded by her loved ones.
The family is extremely grateful to the staff at the Lions Prairie Manor who cared for Mom over the past two years. She regained her health for a time while living at the Manor and very much enjoyed the various activities she took part in. As Mom's health deteriorated her comfort was a priority and her final days were very peaceful.
A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 11:00am at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
