Audrey Meronenko
Peacefully, on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, Audrey Meronenko passed away at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 61years.
Audrey was predeceased by her mother Jean Szepel and step-father Sam Szepel. She is survived by her half-sister Marie Sopko of Calgary, half-brother Barry Szepel of Winnipeg as well as two aunts and numerous cousins.
Audrey was born on August 10, 1952 in Dauphin, Manitoba. She moved to the rural Portage area when 6 years old, attending elementary school in High Bluff and completing Grade 12 At Arthur Meighen High School. After that she remained on the family farm helping with the farm work. She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and looking after the animals. She had a special compassion for the stray cats that came to their yard and made sure they were fed. She was a devoted caregiver to her ailing mother for several years, both at home and looking in on her during her hospital stays. She was a lifelong member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Portage. She fought a courageous battle with cancer and is now resting with her Saviour.
A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, June 4, 2014. Friends are asked to gather at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 10:45 am to proceed to Hillside Cemetery. A reception will follow at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Audrey’s memory to Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Sask. Ave. E. Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 0K8 or to the Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Box 1426, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3N9.
