It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Shizgal (Flatfoot) on March 13, 2025, at the age of 53 years.
Left to treasure his memory are his adoptive parents Eva Kuper and Harry Shizgal; biological mother Angela Perry; adoptive sisters Debbie and Felisa Shizgal; biological sisters Beverley and Jennifer Perry, Tasheena Henry; biological brother Boom Boom (Francis) West; nephews Justin Perry, Ryan Perry, Jordan Alexander, Bryson Alexander, Jayden Alexander, Layton Henry, Michel West; nieces Danielle Perry, Julia Gabriel, Mary Mousseau, Khloe Mousseau; as well as numerous friends and relatives who cared deeply for him.
Predeceased by his brother Daniel Perry and as well as his father Michel Perry, aunt Lillian, and Uncle Johnny, all of whom showed Andrew unconditional love during their short time with him.
Born in Winnipeg, in 1971 to Angela Perry, Andrew, a beloved son, was impacted by the 60’s Scoop, being adopted through Winnipeg Children’s Services and arriving to his adoptive family in Montreal when he was just shy of 1 year old. He was loved as the youngest child with two older sisters. He was full of energy and curiosity, had a bright sharp little mind, and a sugary sweet tooth. He loved animals, play, friends, nature, and big, exciting thrills and always, always, had a hugely kind heart and a whole bodied laugh. Andrew struggled with systems and structures in his family and in school, and had broken wings as he battled against people who did not understand and could not tolerate him bucking the rules. He suffered greatly, was often misunderstood and treated unfairly, and yet somehow kept his heart whole.
A talented artist, Andrew created works of art that will forever encapsulate his legacy. His artwork has showcased his determination to reclaim his culture, choosing to dedicate his talents to indigenous style carvings, where he channeled his cultural interest into tangible and beautiful displays of love for traditional aspects of Indigenous culture.
One of the greatest joys in his life was finding his birth mother and family in Portage, a place where, for the first time, he felt at home. The reunion with his family was full of love, where he easily fell into his role as son, brother, uncle, and nephew. It felt natural, like he was never gone, but nonetheless, the family finally felt complete. The loss of years made him a baby in our eyes, we were soft with him, gentle, kind, and nurturing, with his personality being that of a big kid, playful, happy, and goofy.
And yet, Andrew was a wanderer, a bright light who followed his own path and unique vision, all the way through this life. Andrew felt a strong connection to the land, choosing to spend his final years roaming, free of rules, barriers, and responsibilities. We are all hoping he finds more ease in the spirit world.
