Alvin William Stanger

With family at his side, Alvin William Stanger passed away May 13, 2011 at the age of 78 years.

Alvin was born on January 17, 1933 in Portage la Prairie with farming in his blood. Over the years many an hour was spent on the old John Deere and planning the next cropping decision with grampa Stanger.

Many will know Alvin from his more than 30 years at Narvey's Mens Wear, where he certainly must have picked up his snappy dress style. He could always be seen around town in his trademark cap.

Community service was also a big part of his life. He was a member of the Lions Club, Masons, and Order of the Eastern Star. One of his proudest accomplishments was as chairman of the board overseeing the planning and construction of Lions Manor.

Alvin had widespread interests. He enjoyed playing golf and baseball in his younger years, and fixing everything and anything as a true Mr. Fix it. He was glued to the television when curling playoffs were on, was a veracious reader, and enjoyed "cutting the rug" at local dances. Of course to keep up with the latest news, morning coffee with the boys at Tim's was a regular ritual.

When running into Alvin, more often than not he would meet you with a grin, a twinkle in his eye, and a witty comment.

In later years some of his favorite moments were when the Stanger a" Buchanan clan were together filling the house with humorous banter and raucous laughter.

Alvin is lovingly remembered by his wife Marilyn (Wood), sister Lorraine Boyle, son Robert (Bev) with grandchildren Micheal and Brian, and daughter Sandra; Marilyn's family, Rob (Susan) with grandchildren Shawn and Lindsay, Scot (Judy), and Byron.

Alvin was predeceased by his beloved first wife Marlene (McFarlane) and parents William and Edna.

The family considers all of Alvin's friends as honorary pallbearers. Flowers are respectfully declined. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Alvin's memory to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at McKenzie United Church, led by Rev. Marg Scott. Interment will take place at the St. Mary's Cemetery.

It is Robert and Bev's wishes that our friends and neighbours focus on their own issues regarding the flooded areas and help those who need it. Our home is protected and cleared out.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
