Alfreda (Freda) Lorentz
May 2, 1926 a" September 20, 2012
Peacefully, with her children at her side, Freda Lorentz made the journey to be with her beloved, Eddie, on Thursday, September 20, 2012.
Mom was predeceased by her parents Minnie and John Hancock; our Dad, her husband of 27 years, Edgar, in 1971; sisters Pearl, Sue, Marj and Joyce; brothers Howard, Worrick, Roy and Hedley and best friend Terry Hogarth.
She will be forever remembered and cherished by her family. Mom to Lynda (Stan) Janzen, Laurie (Betty), Tom, Tam (Greg) Bachalo and Susan (Brian) Gilbert; she was Nana, Grandma and G-ma to Scott, Craig (Andrea), Lucas (Caroline), Jeremy (Margaret) Bowmaster, Michael (Arleen) Bowmaster, Jeffery, Kris (Terry) Henry, Denise Bachalo, David (Crystal) McLaughlin-Bachalo, Jenn Bachalo, Sydney Gilbert, Davis Gilbert and Alex Gilbert. She was also Great-grandma and "GG" to Brock and Declan Bowmaster; Mitch and Kierst Lorentz; Emma, Victoria and Ava Lorentz; Emely and Morgan Henry, and Seth, Wyatt, Jewels and Logan Mclaughlin-Bachalo.
Left to mourn her passing are Mom's sister, May and brothers-in-law "Pep" and Lew. Mom will also be lovingly remembered by Durwin Bushy; many very special nieces and nephews and incredible friends who were like family to her.
Mom was born near Woodstock, Ontario, the ninth of ten children. At the age of nine she lost her Mother to cancer and went to live with her sister Marj and family. At 17 she enlisted in the Canadian Woman's Army Corps and it was there that she met Eddie Lorentz. Stories of their romance include how Dad took her to meet his family for the first time and introduced Freda to his Mother as "the girl I'm going to marry". He had not yet asked her! They were married on November 4, 1944 and together they made a home for their five children. There were times when resources were scarce, but love and laughter were always in abundance.
When Dad died Mom went to work full time. She was given an opportunity to re-locate so, with her two youngest children, Mom moved to Portage la Prairie. She began working at Stylerite then, later, accepted a position at the Portage Co-op.
Mom enjoyed meeting people and whether it was at work, on holiday, at the rink, in the lobby of her apartment, or, more recently, "scooting" around the Lion's Prairie Manor, her outgoing nature and friendly way nurtured many lifelong friendships.
There will be a celebration of Freda's life on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, with viewing to take place prior to the service. Interment will take place at St. Mary's cemetery in Woodstock, Ontario, at a later date.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing folks who helped us in so many ways to ensure Mom had the best care. We especially want to acknowledge the staff on Skyview who showed such intuitive care and deep compassion for Mom and also took care of the five often weary Souls who wandered your halls over the last few weeks. Thank you.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Mom's memory to the Lions Prairie Manor Foundation Inc., 24 a" 9th Street SE, Portage la Prairie, MB. R1N 3V4
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
